Center Outreach Programs
Utah Science Olympiad
MRSEC is a proud founding sponsor of the University of Utah’s inaugural hosting of the Utah Science Olympiad. MRSEC faculty and graduate students coordinate the new Materials Science event, with an emphasis on nano-materials.
The Utah Science Olympiad is an annual state competition for middle and high school students, with division winners advancing to a national competition. Science Olympiad promotes hands-on learning experiences in science, technology and engineering.
Science & Engineering Clubs
MRSEC faculty and graduate students develop lesson/activity plans according to State Core Curriculum Standards and lead lessons, activities, demonstrations and tours.
Clubs are organized in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake. We also hold monthly Young & WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) at high schools in the Granite School District.
Elementary Engineering Week
MRSEC provides travel funding so more classes get to participate in Elementary Engineering Week at the University of Utah campus each year.
Elementary Engineering Week A FREE program aimed to engage older elementary students (grades 5 – 6) in the practical application of engineering concepts and scientific principles held by the College of Engineering.
Utah MRSEC leads lessons and activities for teachers, as well as provides educational kits, which supplement curriculum and coordinate with Utah Core Standards. Explore the properties of light with Optics for Eyes and Jell-O Optics.
Each summer, the center sponsors and hosts a free, week-long Materials Camp for Teachers, in conjunction with the American Metals Society Foundation. The camp uses materials science lessons and experiments to show educators new ways to make teaching math and core science principles more exciting and accessible to students. 2016 Summer camp information.
We also sponsor the Chain Reaction Program at Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum, a training program for 5th grade teachers to build knowledge and excite students about chemistry and material science!
Museum Partnership Programs
Nano Days is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. Utah MRSEC participates in Nano Days at the Natural History Museum of Utah and the Leonardo Science and Technology museum.
Utah MRSEC also partners with the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum to provide free science festivals for kids in the spring and fall.
